SCEE president David Reeves has told Eurogamer that PlayTV will launch roll out in Europe “from September to December” starting with a UK date of 10th September.

Reeves also confirmed that the device – a digital video recorder add-on for PS3 – will allow users to record TV at the same time as playing games.

“Yep, it’s going to be 10th September that PlayTV comes out,” he told us in an interview set to be published whenever my fingers start working again.

Asked if Sony had overcome technical hurdles and definitely planned to let you record TV at the same time as playing games, he said: “We do, yep.”

“It was very difficult for some of the tech guys but we had to include it in the firmware upgrade, 2.41, but it’s done now,” he said, so in theory if your PS3 is up to date you’re all set for the 10th September launch.

Reeves announced at PlayStation Day in May that PlayTV would cost EUR 99 when it launched in September, but was unable to nail down a date.

He also had some good news for gamers elsewhere in the PAL markets. “We’ve got Australia and New Zealand also lined up for it in January or February, because on their digital terrestrial they haven’t actually set the standards yet

Our buddies over at Massively got a chance to talk to Creative Director Chris Cao and SOE-Austin VP of development John Blakely about how DC Universe Online will interact with the PS3. Those who are concerned about patches for the PS3 having delays compared to the PC game might have some cause. Depending on the update, “there will probably always be an additional level of scrutiny and certification when going to the PLAYSTATION Network, especially when we change the actual executable,” so any delays would be due to that. They added that if it is just content or data on the server, there shouldn’t be any lag.

Blakely also tells us of random tests they did where players were given a PC setup and a PS3 controller to play DCUO. They “were able to kind of switch between the two and have a good time.” They also looking to have a simultaneous launch of both version of the game. Blakely is also promising complete interoperability between the two platforms — but long term plans might change. “We want to make sure that we don’t bind the two. We want to make sure they’re able to work with each other. If we can get proven and comfortable with that, then we’ll do that. If not then we’ll separate those two elements.” For more details, read the entire interview over at Massively.

Guess what? PS3 sold pretty well because of this “Metal Gear” game. The PS3-exclusive and limited edition 80GB bundle accelerated sales to over 400k. PS3 sold 405,488 systems, 84% higher than the Xbox 360. Year-over-year sales in June went up 311%, and month-over-month growth went up 94%.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was the best-selling video game, with 774,647 units sold. More than 2.4 million software units were sold for PS3 in June, representing an increase of more than 300% from this time last year. (Software totals do not include software units sold as part of the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots PS3 retail bundle).

The incredible success of the PS3 this month shouldn’t come as a surprise. We really hope that Sony will be able to continue the momentum of the PlayStation brand in the coming months with its upcoming holiday lineup. Sony’s official word, after the break.

“The PlayStation brand is truly hitting its stride on its long-term opportunity across all three platforms. Our strong June numbers serve as proof to the continued momentum of the PS3 and affirms that we’re exactly where we expected to be. This month’s success can be attributed to the exclusive blockbuster Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and we’re poised for continued growth into the back half of the year with a much anticipated line-up, including LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, Resistance 2, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, and NBA ‘09: The Inside. Additionally, the new PlayStation Network video delivery service will be a big driver for the PS3 and PSP, allowing consumers to extend their multi-media and entertainment experience.”
