Like-for-like rise in Q1 hardware sales; PS3 software quadruples since last year
Sony has revealed huge like-for-like rises in PS3 hardware and software in its Q1 financials.
In terms of like-for-like sales, the platform holder’s flagship console sold double the amount it did last Q1 – up to 1.56m from 0.70m the previous year.
PlayStation 3 software also fared rather well – leaping from 4.7m units in Q1 2007 to 22.8m this time around.
PSP also saw like-for-like rises in hardware and software sales, increasing from 2.13m in Q1 FY2007 to 3.72 in FY 2008. It was a similar story on software, which rose to 11.8m units this Q1 compared to 9.8m in Q1 FY 2007.
PlayStation 2 saw drops in both hardware and software like-for-like figures, falling from 2.66m to 1.51m on hardware and 31.1m to 19.3m in terms of software units.

Yoda as DLC for Soulcalibur IV, says Korean PlayStation site? News Update July 28, 2008

Over the weekend, a video of Darth Vader and Yoda fighting each other in Soulcalibur IVwas leaked onto the internet (and then it was subsequently pulled). Currently, Darth Vader lives only on the PS3 version, while Yoda lives only on the Xbox 360 version. Could Namco Bandai be planning DLC which unlocks the famed Star Wars characters in both versions? It would make a lot of sense, wouldn’t it?
According to the Korean PlayStation site, Yoda will be available for download from the PSN. That sounds like DLC to us. While Namco Bandai hasn’t confirmed anything yet, we wouldn’t be surprised if Yoda (and who knows what other characters) ended up appearing in Soulcalibur IV.
Given that sales are almost a 3 to 1 ratio under the raising sun, that would make it a sound decision? Futher more famitsu recently reviewed the game giving it a 35 out of 40 score.
Soul Calibur IV (PS3/X360, Namco Bandai): 9, 9, 9, 8 – (35/40)
Update 10/18/2008
It Appears that Namco Bandai will be making Yoda Playable Character available via the Playstation Network after all this coming Thursday for only $4.99

Geometry Wars is generally considered to be the jewel in the Xbox Live Arcade crown, but if a comment made to 1Up by Bizarre Creation’s games manager, Craig Howard, are to be believed we could be seeing it coming to the PSN in the future. While Geometry Wars wasn’t specifically mentioned as being planned for the PlayStation Network, Howard did mention that the PSN is “definitely in our company plans going forward,” while Geometry Wars 2 remains an Xbox 360 exclusive. “Currently.”
We’re always excited to hear about more content coming to the PSN, so whether Bizzare Creations are planning on porting Geometry Wars 1 or 2 over or whether they’re planning something entirely different, we’ll happily grab it. Hopefully we find out something concrete sooner, rather than later
Should Sony make Backwards Compatibility a standard feature? July 27, 2008

Given all the recent post over at the official forums, 87% of individuals who were polled when asked which out of all the existing configurations which is your preferred choice? The majority of the people polled, all stated the original CECHA01 60Gb is the best abread of PlayStation 3 systems.
And when selling the units, after pointing out the key differences between the Existing 80Gb MGS 4 Bundle and 40Gb people tend to prefer having Backwards Compatibility as one of the driving features.
Along with the advantages the built-in Media Card reader helps family and love ones to seamlessly share photo’s and memories without the need of computer system. Of course it’s also helps having a copy of Pixar Ratatouille showing the beauty of Blu-Ray. After doing some research I have found keeping backwards compatibility only cost Sony $27.00 dollars per unit. So why not? Given the sales increase for the month of June up 311% last year to date.
I think long term this will hurt Sony rather then help them? There’s still a vast majority of PlayStation 2 market end users who still haven’t made the switch to the new generation.
New Marvel vs. Capcom Game on the Way? July 26, 2008

July 25, 2008 – While this is in no way direct confirmation that a new Marvel vs. Capcom game is in the works, Kevin Feige, President of Production at Marvel Studios did give fans a ray of hope to cling to before an official announcement is made. When asked if a new Marvel vs. Capcom game is possible someday Feige said, “Yes. And maybe sooner than you think.”
An interesting note: Capcom has a title in the works in Japan called Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes. Because of various licensing issues with Tatsunoko it’s virtually impossible that the game will ever make it stateside. Keeping that in mind, the graphics engine and fighting mechanics are already in place which would make it very easy to import Marvel characters and push the game out the door in a relatively short amount of time.
Again, this doesn’t confirm the existence of a new Marvel vs. Capcom title, but it’s certainly something to hang on to until a meaningful announcement is made one way or the other. We’ll have more on this as it develops.
